Obtaining a Fair Child Support Result
Divorce puts a lot of financial strain on each parent.
In an effort to make sure that children don't pay the price for that, legislatures in Illinois and across the country have developed standardized formulas to determine how much support should be ordered in any divorce.
At the law offices of Chrystel L. Gavlin, P.C., we help husbands, wives and unmarried parents to obtain fair child support determinations in Will County divorce and paternity cases. We offer professional, aggressive representation in all areas of our family law practice and we are prepared to protect your rights in court.
Do you have questions about Illinois child support laws? Are you looking for a lawyer who can get a family court to modify the amount of support you're currently paying or receiving? Call or contact our law firm today and schedule a free consultation with attorney Chrystel L. Gavlin.
Illinois' Child Support Guidelines
Illinois uses a formula that sets support payments at a fixed percentage of the non-custodial parent's net income based on the number of children for which he or she is responsible. For example, with one child, non-custodial parents can expect to pay 20 percent of their net income in support each month.
It is important to note that the definition of "income" is broad and may include loans, overtime pay, "gifts" from parents, new spouses, employers or others— and that judges have broad discretion to deviate from the guidelines as well, after considering the best interests of the children.
In addition to helping divorcing parents obtain child support terms they can live with, we help parents obtain contributions for college expenses and child support modifications after divorce, and we provide post-divorce child support enforcement services as well.
